When I first started teaching in 2008, I was excited to get out and start buying outfits for my new career as an educator. I was sure that this was going to be easy and I was going to have a lot of fun while doing it! So I started my journey as many other teachers and school staff do; I went to local stores, malls, and boutiques. That was when I discovered that this was going to be more challenging than I thought.
I wanted clothing that was trendy, affordable, and also met the staff dress code. I soon realized that it was going to be difficult to get all three of those options at any given time. If the clothing was trendy and met the staff dress code, it tended to be more expensive. If the clothing was affordable and met the staff dress code, I found them to be bland or like every other thing out there already. Not to mention the time it took to go from store to store looking for clothing I wanted to wear as a teacher!
In the end, I found myself with a closet full of clothes and accessories but cycling through the same “go-to” outfits that I really enjoyed the most. This “tactic” continued for years as I progressed my career in education by becoming a peer facilitator and then a school counselor. One day in early 2020, I sat with my husband discussing how annoyed I had become with my clothing dilemma and told him that I wanted to start my own little boutique that would cater more to teacher fashion. A place where teachers could find unique and trendy clothing and accessories in one place! I told him to imagine all the time that educators could save. I mean, who wouldn’t understand the excitement of having pockets in a dress more than a teacher? That was when the idea for The Teacher Closet was born; make it easier for someone in education, or any profession for that matter, to find trendy and affordable clothing and accessories that adhere to the educator’s dress code. I know what it’s like going through rack upon rack of clothing, I know what it is like bringing your husband and kids with you while you look, I know the feeling of not having a closet you’re excited to dig into to always have that perfect outfit for the day.
